School Programmes and Resources

Gateway

Gateway is a programme initiated and funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) to assist secondary schools in making learning relevant for their senior students by providing them with opportunities to learn in the workplace. At the same time, Gateway offers employers exposure to potential new employees.

High School Gateway coordinators work with employers to ensure a good fit between student and workplace. The duration of the placements is for one day per week or an equivalent time during the school year. Details are negotiated between the school and the employer. Placement in blocks of time or during weekends and holidays is also possible.

It is important to note that Gateway is not a work experience programme. Work places do not pay the students but do provide on the job training. Students will work towards achieving Unit Standards and/or Achievement Standards during their placement. This will prepare them for employment and further training when they leave school. Students will gain work experience and qualifications which they can add to their Curriculum Vitae.

Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR)

STAR is a capped funding resource available to secondary, composite, area or special schools that have Years 11 to 13 students. It is not available to private schools and foreign fee-paying students and adult students are not included in STAR funding calculations.

The intention of the grant is to enable secondary schools to facilitate their senior students’ smooth transition from schooling to further education, training or employment. It enables secondary schools to provide or purchase tertiary courses which will better meet students’ needs.

Private schools can enrol students in STAR offerings; however they are not entitled to STAR funding. The fees are slightly higher and these schools are required to ensure their students are fully enrolled and have paid all relevant fees before they are able to participate in classes.
